Internet-based Activities
Unit 1: The History of Jewellery Activity: Read the information about the history of jewellery. Explain how it was used in pre-history, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Roman times. Then compare these uses to modern times. What kind of people use jewellery today? Is there a difference between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ jewellery? Where can you find ‘good’ jewellery? And where can you buy ‘cheap’ jewellery?
Unit 2: Teenagers Everywhere Activity: Answer the following questions: What Is Bipolar Disorder? What Is cellulite? What causes bad breath? What is peer pressure? Finally, explain your opinion about the main problems teenagers have in their daily life.
Unit 3: Pet Cloning Activity: Who was Dolly the sheep? Why was she famous around the world? Write a short biography about Dolly, explaining the stages of early cloning, how Dolly was created, how she died and why she was so important for modern science.
Unit 4: Ignobel Prizes Activity: Go to the Prize Winners List and select three winners whose studies you think are really interesting, and explain why. Finally, select the most strange or useless study and state why.
Unit 5: Cyber Sports Activity: Look for the WCG 2007. Where do they take place? When? What are the games on the official list? How many participants were there? What is your opinion on the WCG? Do you think they can be considered ‘sports’? Would you like to participate?
Unit 6: The History of Chocolate Activity: Go to the ‘Chocolate Challenge’ and answer every question. Write down your answers to complete a short history of chocolate. Finally, go to the ‘Just For Kids’ section and complete the Chocolate Crossword.
Unit 7: Rule the School Activity: What is Napster? What is P2P technology? How was Napster created? What was its first use? What happened when musicians discovered their songs were on Napster? Were there any bands that supported Napster? What happened when Napster was forced to shut down? What other P2P programs do you know or use?
Unit 8: Oliver Twist Activity: Read the information about child labour, and answer the following questions in your own words. What is child labour? Who are child labourers and how many are there? Where do child labourers live? What do child labourers do? Why should we care? How can ordinary people help reduce child labour? What are some of the myths or misunderstandings about child labour? What causes child labour today? What is your opinion on this problem? Unit 9: Art on Wheels Activity: Go to the ‘Gallery’ section. Imagine you have to create a Skateboard Art Exhibition. Choose 10 skateboard graphics from 10 different skateboard artists and describe the artwork. Finally, explain which are your top three favourite board graphics, and include your own proposal of skateboard art.
