Website Activities
Activities: grammar, vocabulary and culture activities + quizzes Note: The activities may take some time to download - please be patient! Windows: After downloading, double-click the file and then click "Run". A shortcut named "Challenge 2" will appear on your desktop. Double-click it to open the activities. Linux: After downloading, right-click the file and select "Open with 'Wine Program Loader'". Two icons will appear on your desktop. You can trash the "lnk" icon. Double-click the "desktop" icon and then click "Mark as Trusted". The icon will change its name to "Challenge 2". Double-click it to open the activities.
Internet-based Activities
Unit 2: Birthdays Activity: Read the explanation about the origins of birthdays. Then click on 'Birthday Traditions in Different Countries'. Select three different countries and compare the way they celebrate birthdays with the way you and your family celebrate birthdays.
Unit 3: Fashion Activity: Read the text about how specific items of clothing developed. Then, choose three specific items of clothing and explain how they were invented and why you think they are important for society.
Unit 4: Wild Animals Activity: Select a family of animals and then give a short description of their anatomy, physiology and reproductive systems. Then, choose one example from the list and describe the picture in detail.
Unit 5: Going Green Activity: Read every idea in each section. Add at least one more of your own ideas for each section about things you can do to go green.
Unit 6: TV Programmes Activity: Read the soap opera characteristics, and then write about any local TV soap opera you know. Comment on the plot, the main characters, where it takes place and how long it has been on the air. Finally, review an important episode and state whether you like the show or not, and why.
Unit 7: Alternative Homes Activity: After reading the information on cave homes, choose one of the homes on the list. Imagine you had to buy a cave home. Which one would you buy? Why? Make a list of pros and cons.
Unit 8: Crime Activity: Read one of the histories and then write about it. Comment on the plot and where and when it takes place.
Unit 9: Women and Sport Activity: Read the anniversaries in 'Women’s History of Sports'. Choose the three examples you think are the most significant and explain why. Finally, find and write about a sportswoman you admire.
Unit 10: Music Activity: Read the 'DJ History'. What were the main periods when DJs were created? What was their social function? What do DJs do today? Where do they work? Name some of your favourites.
