Activities: grammar, vocabulary and culture activities + quizzes Note: The activities may take some time to download - please be patient! Internet-based Activities
Unit 1: In the Wild Activity: Read the article ‘Gatored Community’ about the old urban legend stating that the New York City Sewer System is full of crocodiles. Then write a review commenting on the origins of the claim, the different reports about their existence, and the theories that debunk the myth. What’s your opinion on the subject? Do you know any similar urban legend?
Unit 2: History Activity: Read the article 'The London Plague of 1665'. Explain how and where the plague started, what wealthy people did, how the city reacted, what measures were taken, and finally how the plague receded.
Unit 4: Cinema Activity: Read the article on the 'History of Horror Films'. Choose your favourite films or series of horror films, and write a short review explaining how they originated, why you find them scary, what versions have been made, and which one is your favourite.
Unit 5: Modern Art Activity: Read Damien Hirst’s biography and then check his collection of artwork. Select three works that you like, describe what they look like, how they are made, what materials were used, and where they are being exposed. Finally, discuss whether you think Hirst’s pieces can be considered "art" r "omething else". Give reasons to support your opinion.
Unit 6: Inventions Activity: Read the list of 'Top 10 Inventions' and decide which three are the most important for you in your daily life. Which of these inventions do you think has revolutionized the world in a bigger way? Use the Internet Search Engines to add information to your essays.
Unit 8: Relationships Activity: Choose at least one activity suggested on the list from every category (on rainy days, sunny days, at the weekend, for an evening out, etc.) and explain what you think is a good idea for a couple to do. Then, propose other alternatives you may have tried.
Unit 9: What’s Cooking? Activity: Make a list of the 10 most strange, disgusting and funny foods you can find on the list. Then, create a restaurant menu consisting of a starter, a main dish, something to drink and a dessert. Try to be as creative as you can. Remember you don’t have to eat the actual menu!
